Protecting Vegetable Gardens
This is Yard Rescuers and we’re going to teach these neighbours how to get the lawns and gardens they’ve always wanted, so join us to see how we can bring these yards back to life in just a few easy steps with help from the latest Scotts and Miracle-Gro products.
On this episode, we’re going to Joe and Brenda’s house to check out their vegetable garden and help them protect it from insects, slugs, and weeds. So this is a beautiful vegetable garden. What are you growing? Garlic, tomatoes, peppers, things that we enjoy eating.
So how much would you normally harvest from this garden? Oh, quite a bit. Enough for our family, for our neighbours, for our friends. Wow, sounds like it’s good to be friends with Joe and Brenda.
Well, the work is paying off because this garden is looking amazing. But I hate to say this, Joe: I’ve noticed a few things. Let’s take a closer look. It looks like a few other things have been snacking on your vegetables, too. See the holes in these leaves? Well, we have a lot of bugs and slugs around here. Unfortunately, that’s the nature of outdoor gardening. You’re going to attract some bugs and even weeds, but it’s when they get out of hand that they can cause some serious damage to your crop. Let’s go take a look at some great products that will get these bugs out of here on no time.
When you see bugs on your plants, you can kill them on contact with Scotts EcoSense Bug B Gon Insecticidal Soap. This will control insects like aphids, earwigs, mealybugs, and spider mites. Now, slugs and snails usually attack hostas, but they can be a problem around vegetable gardens, too. To get rid of them, I recommend we use Scotts EcoSense Slug B Gon. This specially formulated bait will give you immediate protection but it won’t harm pets or other wildlife and it will naturally break down in your soil. That’s good to know because we have two cats.
To control weeds before they start, you can also lay down Scotts Nature Scapes Mulch. This will prevent weeds from popping up and it will naturally retain the moisture in your garden so that you won’t have to water as often. Mulch also breaks down slowly to add organic matter back into your soil and it looks great, too.
Alright, guys, I think it’s time we go protect your garden. Wonderful job, you two. So what do you think? I think it’s going to make a big difference.
I agree, Joe. So if you see any bugs coming back, feel free to give your plants another treatment. You can use Bug B Gon Insecticidal Soap and Slug B Gon right up until the day of harvest. Well, that’s it for this episode of Yard Rescuers. For more great lawn and garden tips, visit Scotts.ca.
