The Differences Between Garden Soil and Top Soil

Hi, I’m Emily. I work in the Gardens Marketing department at Scotts and today we’re going to talk about the differences between top soil and garden soil.

Top soil is a great, all-purpose product that can be used for filling holes and leveling plants in beds, but if you want great results, garden soil is definitely the way to go.

Garden soil is made of a special blend of sphagnum peat moss, compost, manure, and nutrients that’s designed to help your plants thrive. Here’s how to use it. Spread a 3 inch layer of garden soil over the area that you want to plant, and then mix into the top 6 inches of your native soil.

Now that you have the garden soil mixed into your native soil, it’s time to plant. Dig a hole that’s two times the size of the root ball of the plant you’re planting. Add the plant to the hole, fill in with soil, now just water, and you’re ready for great results.

Top soil is great for filling holes and leveling garden beds. Here’s how to use it. Just add top soil to the area to be filled or leveled. Mix into your native soil using a trowel or shovel, then plant as usual.
