How to fit a child’s bike helmet

Wearing a bike helmet that fits properly is your child's best defense against head injury in case of a bad fall or accident. Don’t worry — you got this!

[Step 1: Cover the forehead]

Make sure the helmet covers your child’s forehead without sliding back. It should be about two finger widths above the eyebrows.

[Step 2: Adjust the chin strap]

The chin strap should be adjusted so it’s tight enough to hold the helmet down without any wiggling. One or two fingers should be able to fit between the strap and the chin.

[Step 3: Adjust the side straps]

The side straps should be adjusted to fit just below the ear.

[Step 4: Create a custom fit]

Some helmets come with sizing pads to adjust the fit. Mix and match the pads to find what works for your child. Some come with a dial fit adjuster to get a snug, custom fit.

[Step 5: Give it a final check]

Check that the helmet does not rock back and forth or side to side. Also have your child open their mouth wide — the helmet should pull down slightly on their head.

With a helmet that fits properly, your child is ready for a safe and enjoyable ride. Don’t worry — you got this!
