How to Protect Shrubs for Winter

We aren’t the only ones who require winter jackets. When fall and winter are upon us, it’s important to protect our shrubs for the cold Canadian temperatures ahead. Don’t worry – you got this.

Make sure your shrub is watered thoroughly before the cold weather sets in. It will freeze over winter and unthaw in Spring providing instant water for the roots.

For individual trees or shrubs, tie the leading end of the winter wrap to the trunk below the lowest branch.

Next, proceed to wrap the tree or shrub in an upward spiral direction, allowing an overlap of the burlap.

Then, using Garden Twine, overwrap the winter wrap to secure it in place for the remainder of the season.

Taking a few minutes to protect your shrubs will go a long way in prolonging their life and beauty for seasons to come. Don’t worry – you got this.
